Our Story

A brief history of how we came to be

In 2007, life-long best friends Ross Mattis and Ned Wheeler founded the first Barrel Thief location in Short Pump, Virginia to give you the chance to experience wine in the same location where you buy wine. With both a 35 seat restaurant and full 400+ label retail wine shop all under one roof, Barrel Thief is the perfect place to taste wine, learn about wine, and then take home your favorites. In late 2008, Ross and Ned opened the second Barrel Thief location at the intersection of Patterson and Libbie.

So what makes Barrel Thief so special? Well, many things we hope, but one thing that stands out is there is never a restaurant mark-up on wine! That’s right, pay retail prices to drink with us. Price around and you will quickly realize just how large a savings this can be.
